Creative Writing

I make no claims about the quality of my writings, but I figured I might as well share the few pieces of creative writing I've done in the last few years.

  • To A Trained Eye - This was my entry into NaNoWriMo 2004. I finished it at 50,225 words. It was quite an experience to bang this out in less than a month. I will be going back and editing/revising this at some point, but for now, here is the final draft.

  • Padawan Yoda - A Star Wars fan fiction about Yoda as a young man ... er, alien. From late 2002.
       PDF | HTML | TXT | e-book (MS Reader)
  • Destined to Nano - This was done as a warmup to NaNoWriMo 2004; the task I set was to write a 15,000 word short story in a week, slightly above the pace required for NaNoWriMo. I chose a simple topic that would be easy to write: two kids that decide to attempt the challenge of NaNoWriMo.

  • Transformations - This is the beginning of my 2003 NaNoWriMo entry. I was highly determined to get a 4.0 that semester, and thus I gave up early in November to focus on school. It's highly unrevised and hardly edited, but hey, somebody might like it.

Music

I played guitar in a band as a young teenager, but then I got out of it for a long time. I've recently started working on some music again, playing guitar, bass, and scrounging together something resembling drum beats. Besides the NIN remix, nothing listed here is "done", but it's coherent enough that I'm willing to share it anyway.

  • Germ (Draft 20070912) - The first song I really tried to complete after my return to the guitar. I spent a good amount of time polishing this one to the point it is, and I still think it's the worst of what I've come up with. Oh well, I'm not scrapping it yet. =) Solos in this one are not improvised, but are only slight tweaks of solos I did improvise... Also, the name is meaningless, it's in G minor and I'm a dork like that.

  • Diciembre (Predraft 20080112) - All in all, this one came to me pretty quick. The main riff came out of some random noodling, I built the other pieces off of it, and somehow it all fit together pretty well. This is the most incomplete of the songs I've worked on, but I like it.

  • Damp (Draft 20080115) - I thought this one was a bit of a step up in my ability to actually compose something that didn't sound totally generic, and the "chorus"-type parts are some of my favorites of everything I've recorded. The solo at the end, however, totally sucks. I've got some ideas about rewriting it (this one's improvised), but haven't gotten around to it.

  • Datum (Draft 20080515) - I'd taken some breaks from guitar for a couple of months, and once I'd gotten back into practice, I decided to try some songwriting exercises. I was going to try and write a song per week, doing my best not to get lost in pointless polishing (like I did with Germ) and just focus on the broad strokes. This is what I had at the end of the week, and while it's really simple, I think it's the best music I've written. I kind of think it sounds like a soundtrack to an action or car scene or something.

  • Calcium (Draft 20080528) - This was the second (and final... at least for a while) week of my exercise, and I kind of got over ambitious in making something a little longer / more complex. In the end, I find it very incomplete and the final portion is just total crap. But I think it was going well otherwise, so I look forward to finishing it up sometime. After this one, I took a vacation, and have had an extended break from guitar since. (I try not to force it...)

  • The Hand That Feeds (Voidious' Breath Mix) - This is my second attempt at remixing The Hand That Feeds, by Nine Inch Nails. One thing I noticed a lot about With Teeth is that I heard a lot more of Reznor's breaths and gasps in the vocals of the songs than I ever had on previous albums. I went through the source files of THTF (that he so kindly released) and sampled every single breathy sound that I could find. I ended up with 62 samples, and used them as the basis for this remix. (Note: I couldn't resist adding a few that weren't from the song... but most of them are, and all of them are Trent.) I hope you enjoy it.

My dijitari.com Stuff

Current / cool dijitari stuff:

  • What Are You? - I call this "an interactive tribute to Tyler Durden and Fight Club". If you like the movie, check it out. Perl/SQL. (Beware of vulgarity.)
  • My Weblog - Had an on/off urge to set one up for a while, but I finally decided to just do it. Check here for all my latest personal ramblings.
Ancient / nostalgic stuff:
  • Frij Poetry - OK, so it's not Flash and you can't drag words around, but it's a decent (circa 2000) web-based approximation of fridge poetry. This is all done in PHP and SQL save one little helper Perl script.
  • RapBot v0.2 - A very elementary computerized rap generator. It might get a rewrite some day, but probably not. It's written in Java and tries to create two (random, but) semi-coherent sentences that rhyme. (Actually, it's loading one of like 10,000 preloaded ones, for speed.)
  • XVII - Online Haiku - A haiku site where you can post your own haiku, browse the ones others have posted, browse a few classic haiku or vote for any on the site. Everything's in Perl and SQL. Made it quite a while ago, probably more driven by an urge to do some web programming, but I've left it up.
