Creative Writing

I make no claims about the quality of my writings, but I figured I might as well share the few pieces of creative writing I've done in the last few years.

  • To A Trained Eye - This was my entry into NaNoWriMo 2004. I finished it at 50,225 words. It was quite an experience to bang this out in less than a month. I will be going back and editing/revising this at some point, but for now, here is the final draft.

  • Padawan Yoda - A Star Wars fan fiction about Yoda as a young man ... er, alien. From late 2002.
       PDF | HTML | TXT | e-book (MS Reader)
  • Destined to Nano - This was done as a warmup to NaNoWriMo 2004; the task I set was to write a 15,000 word short story in a week, slightly above the pace required for NaNoWriMo. I chose a simple topic that would be easy to write: two kids that decide to attempt the challenge of NaNoWriMo.

  • Transformations - This is the beginning of my 2003 NaNoWriMo entry. I was highly determined to get a 4.0 that semester, and thus I gave up early in November to focus on school. It's highly unrevised and hardly edited, but hey, somebody might like it.

Music

I was in a band as a young teenager, but got out of it for a long time. I've recently started working on some music again. Right now, these three tracks are all that's here, but there will definitely be more in the future.

  • The Hand That Feeds (Voidious' Breath Mix) - This is my more recent attempt at remixing The Hand That Feeds, by Nine Inch Nails. One thing I noticed a lot about With Teeth is that I heard a lot more of Reznor's breaths and gasps in the vocals of the songs than I ever had on previous albums. I went through the source files of THTF (that he so kindly released) and sampled every single breathy sound that I could find. I ended up with 62 samples, and used them as the basis for this remix. (Note: I couldn't resist adding a few that weren't from the song... but most of them are, and all of them are Trent.) I hope you enjoy it.

  • The Hand That Feeds (Voidious' Original Slam Mix) - This is the first music I've produced in about 10 years. It's a remix of Nine Inch Nails' song off With Teeth, "The Hand That Feeds"; it's based on the source files of the GarageBand project that Trent Reznor was kind enough to release earlier this year. It's a pretty basic remix, and certainly nothing special. I decided to just call it a remix and move on to a second remix instead of tweaking this one into perfection.

  • Weak (Original Instrumental Mix) - At 13, I wrote this song as part of a 5-member rock band, and it became one of our main songs. I wrote the guitar, the bass guitar was based on it, and the singer wrote his own lyrics. Shortly after leaving this band, I recreated the song on my computer using nothing but a WAV editor (Cool Edit); it was quite a task! It came out fairly well, considering the tools I had at the time. Many years later (about two years ago), I reproduced that song, and it sounds... well, pretty crappy, because I still didn't really know how to produce music on the computer. Maybe I'll remake it again soon. =)

My dijitari.com Stuff

Here's a list of my dijitari.com stuff:

  • My Weblog - Had an on/off urge to set one up for a while, but I finally decided to just do it. Check here for all my latest personal ramblings.
  • XVII - Online Haiku - A haiku site where you can post your own haiku, browse the ones others have posted, browse a few classic haiku or vote for any on the site. Everything's in Perl and SQL.
  • Frij Poetry - OK, so it's not Flash and you can't drag words around, but it's a pretty fun web-based approximation of fridge poetry. This is all done in PHP and SQL save one little helper Perl script.
  • Diamond Comics Shipping Database - A database of everything Diamond Comics, the #1 distributor of comics in the U.S. (I believe), has shipped since September of '98. I first wanted to do this just for personal use, but figured others might get some use out of it too. This is PHP/SQL with some Perl used to parse the lists.
  • What Are You? - I call this "an interactive tribute to Tyler Durden and Fight Club". If you like the movie, check it out. Perl/SQL. (Beware of vulgarity.)
  • RapBot v0.2 - A very elementary computerized rap generator. It might get a rewrite sometime soon. This version of RapBot is written in Java; the web page just loads one of a few thousand pre-generated random raps via a Perl script.
